African American Pharmacogenomics
The Perera laboratory focuses on pharmacogenomics (using a patient's genome to predict drug response) in minority populations. We briefly describe two of our major projects below as: Genomics of Drug Metabolism and the African American Cardiovascular Pharmacogenomics Consortium (ACCOuNT). Our goal is to make precision medicine available to all, and you can learn details about these two projects and many more on our lab website.
Genomics of Drug Metabolism
Using hepatocytes derived from African American donors we are able to obtain genomic, transcriptomic and drug response data from the same individual. This basic science study will help us to understand how drug metabolizing enzymes in the liver (important across pharmacology) differ between people and the role of the African American genome in regulating these differences.
